What's Your Communication Style?

Calculating your results...

About This Quiz

This quiz identifies whether you communicate assertively, passively, aggressively, or passive-aggressively across real-life situations. Communication style research, rooted in assertiveness training by Alberti and Emmons, shows that how we express needs and handle conflict directly impacts the quality of every relationship we have.

Assertive communication means clearly expressing your needs while respecting others. It is associated with higher relationship satisfaction, better mental health, and more effective conflict resolution. Passive communication leads to resentment and unmet needs. Aggressive communication damages trust. Passive-aggressive communication creates confusion and unresolved tension.

Most people shift styles depending on the relationship and the stakes. Use your result to identify where your communication becomes less effective and with whom. Building assertiveness is a learnable skill. If communication patterns are consistently causing conflict or distress, a therapist or counsellor can provide structured support.

Research basis: Alberti and Emmons (1970), interpersonal assertiveness theory.
