What's Your Conflict Style?

Calculating your results...

About This Quiz

This quiz is based on the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI), widely used in organisational psychology. The five styles are Avoiding, Accommodating, Competing, Compromising, and Collaborating. They reflect different combinations of assertiveness (concern for your own needs) and cooperativeness (concern for the other party's needs).

Each style has situations where it is effective and situations where it causes problems. Collaborating produces the best long-term outcomes but requires time and trust. Competing works in genuine emergencies but erodes relationships when overused. Avoiding prevents escalation but leaves issues unresolved. Understanding your default helps you recognise when a style is costing more than it solves.

Use your result to develop flexibility. The goal is not to eliminate any style but to choose deliberately based on context. If recurring conflict is damaging important relationships, a mediator or couples therapist can provide structured support to help build healthier communication patterns.

Research basis: Thomas and Kilmann (1974) Conflict Mode Instrument.
