About This Quiz

This quiz measures emotional availability, your capacity to be present, attuned, and responsive in close relationships. Emotional availability research, developed by Zeynep Biringen, examines whether people can read and respond to others' emotional cues, tolerate emotional expression without defensiveness, and maintain genuine connection under stress.

Emotional availability is distinct from emotional intelligence. You can understand emotions intellectually but still struggle to show up emotionally in real moments of vulnerability, particularly if your own emotional needs were not consistently met in childhood or if you carry unprocessed pain that makes closeness feel threatening.

Use your results to identify specific situations or emotions where you tend to withdraw. Emotional availability can be developed through mindfulness, reflective practice, and therapy. If emotional unavailability is causing persistent conflict or distance in your most important relationships, a therapist experienced in Emotionally Focused Therapy can provide meaningful support.
